Hundreds of thousands of women get breast implants each year. Reasons for getting this procedure vary from wanting to increase breast size for cosmetic reasons (breast augmentation) to reconstruction following mastectomy for breast cancer.
To get a good idea of how you will look before and after breast implants and the decisions to be made, here are some of the choices you will want to go over with your plastic surgeon.
Increase Breast Size: Small to Large Breast Implants
One of the biggest decisions you have to make when thinking about breast implants before and after is how large you want your breasts to be. In talking to your plastic surgeon and looking at pictures of women before and after breast implants, you will begin to get more of an idea of how much increase in breast size you are looking for.
Breast implant sizing is a science as well as an art. One of the best ways to make this decision is by “trying on” breast implants during your initial consultation and pre-operative appointments. You will be able to put on a bra and try on actual implants of different sizes. This is something you can play around with at home as well.
When it comes to the final decision regarding breast implants, Dr. Ganchi will go over specific sizes, shapes and measurements to ensure you get the look you desire. You will be shown plenty of pictures of various sizes of breast implants before and after.
Breast Implants Before and After Surgery: Types of Material
One of the variables you’ll be deciding on when selecting the style and shape of your implants is the type of material the implant will be filled with. Breast implants are filled with either saline or silicone gel.
Silicone Implants for your Breast Augmentation consist of a silicone outer shell and thick silicone gel fill. The gel inside the implant is very thick and similar in consistency to a rubbery gelatin. The fill material is cohesive in that it sticks together and does not run like a fluid.
Some of these cohesive forms are known as “gummy bear” implants.
Saline breast implants also consist of a silicone outer shell. However, these implants are filled with a sterile salt-water solution. The implant is placed in the breast while empty and then filled to size after proper placement.
Curves and Shape Before and After Breast Implants
Breast implants come in two basic shapes:
Round Breast Implants is the traditional shape used in the United States and the choice for most women undergoing routine breast augmentation with implants. These implants come in a wide variety of diameters and degrees of projection, providing enormous flexibility in fitting any woman’s breast and body type. Round implants create a soft and nicely proportioned breast.
Teardrop-shaped breast implants are silicone filled and designed to maintain their shape, thus they are frequently called “form-stable” implants. The silicone gel is thicker than that used is traditional round implants. These are designed in a wide variety of teardrop shapes such as “tall” ovals or “wide” ovals. These breast implants also come in varying sizes from relatively small to large breast implants.
Photos of Breast Augmentation Before and After
The look you wish to achieve after breast augmentation is a very personal decision and one you will discuss with your cosmetic surgeon.
As you go over how much of an increase in breast size you are looking for and what will look right for your frame, your plastic surgeon will probably show you pictures of other patients, before and after breast implants. Here, you will get an idea of the type and amount of change that you think will look good.
Getting the results you want from your breast augmentation will be due, in part, to the thoroughness of your consultation and in part to the education, experience and skill of your plastic surgeon.
