Breast Implants Before and After Surgery: Types of Material
One of the variables you’ll be deciding on when selecting the style and shape of your implants is the type of material the implant will be filled with. Breast implants are filled with either saline or silicone gel.
Silicone Implants for your Breast Augmentation consist of a silicone outer shell and thick silicone gel fill. The gel inside the implant is very thick and similar in consistency to a rubbery gelatin. The fill material is cohesive in that it sticks together and does not run like a fluid.
Some of these cohesive forms are known as “gummy bear” implants.
Saline breast implants also consist of a silicone outer shell. However, these implants are filled with a sterile salt-water solution. The implant is placed in the breast while empty and then filled to size after proper placement.
