Why Use Fractional Laser Resurfacing to Rejuvenate the Skin?

By: Dr. Ganchi

Fractional laser resurfacing is a non-invasive method of clearing up a variety of skin problems in a safe and effective way.  The skin becomes clearer, younger-looking and more vibrant once imperfections have been treated with this technologically advanced system.

What Conditions Would Indicate a Need for Fractional Laser Resurfacing?

Facial Lines and Wrinkles can be caused by a number of factors including gravity, smoking, sun damage, muscle movement or just the process of aging.  Luckily, these can be lessened and, in some cases, removed entirely with this resurfacing system.

Acne and Acne Scars are also treatable with this laser system

Surgical Scars can remain obvious years after the surgery was completed.  The scars can be reduced or eliminated with treatment.

Permanent Hair Reduction – Many people have unwanted hair growth on one or more parts of their body’s.  Permanent removal of this hair can be a relief and is another condition that is successfully treated with a laser or an intense pulsed light system (IPL).

Stretch Marks can be caused by the weight gained and lost in having a baby, gaining weight too fast and quickly losing it and by genetics. The marks are caused by the elastic fibers just under the skin’s surface being stretched so quickly that they break.  These marks can be treated with fractional laser resurfacing.

Spider Veins, sometimes called thread veins show up as patches of streaks on the legs.  These annoying blemishes that affect both men and women are treatable on an outpatient basis with a laser or IPL system.

Skin Discoloration or Pigmentation occurs when spots of varying sizes become apparent on the face, hands or other parts of the body.  These are also treatable with either fractional lasers and/or IPL depending on the type of pigmentation and its history.

Although most frequently applied to the face, fractional laser resurfacing can be used on any part of the body.

How does Fractional Laser Resurfacing Work?

The fractional laser works by targeting a specific area and layer of the skin.

The skin consists of three layers: the outermost layer, called the epidermis, the middle layer, known as the dermis, and the lower fat layer, which is called the subcutis.

The three layers have different purposes and are responsible for different aspects of the skin.  For instance, the epidermis contains the cells responsible for skin coloring.  As the body ages and a person goes through life, all three layers of the skin undergo changes.

Fractional Laser treatment works by targeting specific areas of both the outermost and middle layers of skin. The laser setting and depth of treatment depends on the issue that needs to be addressed.

A hand-held device is moved over the treatment zone, while a laser beam that is divided into thousands of tiny columns sends healing pulsated light into the proper layer of skin.  The rays only affect very precise areas, leaving untargeted cells untouched.

The Icon System from Palomar made by the Cynosure Company that we use at our office delivers high peak power while at the same time distributing state-of-the-art cooling.  This helps to ensure the most effective, as well as comfortable treatment.

Is Fractional Laser Resurfacing Safe?

Yes, this treatment is safe and non-invasive.

Does it Hurt?

The cooling device, which is part of the Icon System reduces any discomfort derived from the heat produced by the laser and an anesthetic cream is used during treatment as well.  Depending on the area being treated, local anesthesia may also be used.

How Long Does the Procedure Take?

The length of the procedure is dependent on the area or areas being treated.  However, it usually takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours per session.

How Long Until Result from the Fractional Laser Resurfacing Treatment are Visible?

Many people notice results within a week of completing their treatment.  Depending on the type of treatment and what was treated, improvement can continue for a few months.
