No one can deny that Angelina Jolie is one of the world’s most beautiful celebrity women. The question people have asked is, “Has Angelina Jolie had plastic surgery?” Has she had a celebrity nose job (rhinoplasty)? Are Angelina Jolie’s lips augmented? Any other cosmetic surgery procedures?

Angelina Jolie Mastectomy and Breast Reconstruction

It’s common public knowledge that Ms. Jolie had a double mastectomy to reduce her chances of breast cancer, a disease that runs in her family. This is called a prophylactic mastectomy in that its purpose is to guard against the spread or occurrence of disease.

Women at genetically high risk for breast cancer will, in certain situations, choose to undergo mastectomy, in order to reduce their own risk of breast cancer.

During this surgery, breast tissue can be removed using skin-sparing techniques where the underlying breast tissue is removed from just under the skin, down to the chest wall. The technique removes the glands where breast cancer may be likely to develop. The nipple and surrounding tissue, called the areola, are removed. However, the skin of the breast is spared, preserving the breast skin envelope.

When skin-sparing mastectomy is combined with immediate breast reconstruction, the results can be excellent. While surgery is not an approach that should be advocated for all high-risk individuals, it can be very important for some women. According to the National Cancer Institute, a prophylactic mastectomy in high-risk women may be able to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer by 90%.

Naturally, Angelina Jolie had breast reconstruction immediately after her prophylactic mastectomy surgery.

Angelina Jolie Nose Job – Celebrity Rhinoplasty

In comparing images of Angelina Jolie over the years, it appears the only other plastic surgery she has undergone is a nose job or rhinoplasty.

If you look at pictures taken of Ms. Jolie early in her modeling career, you’ll see a differently shaped nose. The bridge is wider and flatter and the tip broader.

A celebrity nose job procedure can address a variety of features of the nose.

  • Nose size in relation to facial balance
  • Nose width at the bridge or in the size and position of the nostrils
  • Nose profile with visible humps or depressions on the bridge
  • Nasal tip that is enlarged or bulbous, drooping, upturned or hooked
  • Nostrils that are large, wide, or upturned
  • Nasal asymmetry

When a plastic surgeon looks at a patient’s nose with an eye to making aesthetic changes, he will look at the shape and size of each nasal component and its relation to other parts of the nose and the face as a whole.

If Angelina Jolie did have a celebrity rhinoplasty to adjust the shape of her nose, the likelihood is that the surgery addressed the width of the bridge and the size and shape of the nasal tip.

Defining the Perfect Nose for a Celebrity Rhinoplasty

The image of a perfect nose is dictated by cultural ideals as well as the shape of the face, ethnicity, age and personal characteristics.

A perfect nose takes into account the relationship between the nasal tip and the nasal bridge. When these are altered, the plastic surgeon pays close attention to creating and maintaining a unified, balanced and harmonious appearance.

Some features, considered pleasing to the eye include a straight bridge, a narrow nasal tip, a small dip between the bridge and the tip, appropriate facial angles, and the correct amount of nasal projection and width.

Altering the Nasal Tip in a Rhinoplasty

It is a common desire to want to reduce the size or shape of the tip of the nose in order to create what is considered a more refined and elegant nasal tip; this is one of the reasons rhinoplasty is such a popular plastic surgery procedure.

Two factors that can create a bulbous, rounded nasal tip are:

  • Nasal tip skin
    • Patients with thicker nasal skin tend to have rounder nasal tips. In some patients, the skin can be slightly thinned and some fibrofatty tissue removed, thereby reducing the bulbous appearance of the tip.
  • Nasal tip cartilage
    • The second common cause is the tip cartilage (cartilage is a flexible, firm tissue). This can be too wide, too convex, or both.

Creating an Aesthetically Pleasing Nasal Tip

To understand how to improve nasal tip fullness, one needs to look at the anatomy of a great looking nose. A large component of an aesthetic nasal tip is a size appropriate to the rest of the face, and minimal to no convexity to the cartilage of the tip of the nose.

A correctly sized and proportioned nose makes a huge difference to the overall appearance and beauty of the face.

Altering the Bridge of the Nose

The bridge of the nose can be crooked, too wide, too high, depressed or have other subtle appearances that need revision.

Crooked Nose

Straightening crooked noses is one of the most difficult tasks in rhinoplasty. A crooked nose can occur for several different reasons including accident or injury, or asymmetric nasal growth. Deformities can be broken down into two major categories. These include bony deviations (upper half of the nose), and cartilage deviations (lower half of the nose).

Different techniques are required in nasal revisions for a crooked or deviated nose.

Bridge Too Wide

Some people are dissatisfied with the thickness or width or their nasal bridge. If the excess width is caused by the thickness of the skin, the plastic surgeon can change the shape of the nose by making it a bit thinner. If, however, the extra width or thickness is caused by the underlying bone structure, a different technique will be used to bring down the size by making changes to the bone.

Hump or Bump on the Bridge

A bump on the bridge of the nose can be caused by genetics or injury. In either case, a plastic surgeon can improve appearance by eliminating the protrusion. This is done by reducing the underlying cartilage and/or making changes to the nasal bone.

Depressed Area of the Nasal Bridge

A depressed area of the nose causing what is sometimes called a “ski slope nose” can be repaired with proper and skilled plastic surgery. Typically, this is corrected by using either cartilage from the septum or ear or an implant to fill the area of depression.

Rhinoplasty is a highly effective way of improving facial appearance.

If Angelina Jolie did have a nose job in her early modeling career, it was an excellent job.

I have read rumors online to the effect that Angelina Jolie has had cosmetic lip reduction surgery to reduce the size of her lips and rumors she has had surgery to plump them up. In my opinion, she has had neither.

Until and unless Ms. Jolie tells us otherwise, it appears the only likely aesthetic plastic surgery she has had is a minimal nose job early in her modeling career.

And of course, Ms. Angelina Jolie has a rare, natural beauty.
