Difference between Saline and Silicone Breast Implants
Saline vs Silicone Implants
Double board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ganchi offers two types of breast implants in his New Jersey office. Dr. Ganchi knows that both breast size and shape are important, so please be open with him about your goals and expectations. Also, be aware that there are other factors that will help determine implant type and size, such as your unique skin elasticity, body type, and breast anatomy.
Saline Breast Implants
Saline breast implants are composed of sterile salt water. These implants are filled with varying quantities of saline, depending upon the size, shape, and level of firmness you desire. Though rare, it is possible for saline implants to leak. In the event of a leak, the implant will collapse, and your body will naturally absorb and expel the implant’s salt water contents.
Saline breast implants are FDA-approved for enhancement in women 18 or older, but they are occasionally considered for younger women if used for breast reconstruction.
Silicone Breast Implants
Silicone breast implants are composed of an elastic gel. Typically this gel is considered to feel and move more naturally. Like saline implants, various sizes and shapes are available for your consideration. In the unlikely event of a silicone implant leak, it is possible for the gel to remain in the implant shell, but it may also leak into the breast implant pocket.
Though your silicone implant may leak, it may not collapse. Dr. Ganchi recommends periodic visits to check on your implants. MRI screenings or ultrasounds are the best method of assessing the functionality of your breast implants.
Silicone implants are FDA-approved for enhancement in women 22 or older, but they are occasionally considered for younger women if used for breast reconstruction.
